Drawing

Four tool-bar categories cover freehand mark-up. Selecting a category activates its tool straight away: the panel you see is the tool you get.

Pen

Freehand ink from the S Pen or Apple Pencil. The left panel offers the black Pen preset, Whiteout (a thick stroke in the page background colour for masking), and your saved line style presets (colour/width/dash combinations). Below them:

• Pressure : on by default, so the stroke width follows how hard you press. Turn it off for an even width.
• Touch : see Stylus and touch.
• Edit : opens the Lines tab of the Setup screen to manage the presets.

Highlight

Semi-transparent marker strokes. Pick from your highlight styles (colour, width, opacity) in the left panel; Edit opens the Highlights tab of the Setup screen to manage them.

Line

Straight lines: leader lines, arrows, and dashed rules. Pick a line style (plain styles first, arrow styles below), then drag from the start point to the end point. Edit opens the Lines tab of the Setup screen. The first time you pick Line, a card at the top of the page reminds you to drag; tap Got it to hide it for good. The Line tool stays ready.

Tapping a drawing category that’s already highlighted (Pen, Highlight, Line, Eraser, Shape) picks its tool back up if it had stopped.

To restyle a line you’ve already drawn, select it with the Select tool, then tap the Line category. The line stays selected and the panel adds a Selected Line section. Tap any preset there to apply it.

Eraser

Rub out strokes. Pick Small, Medium or Large in the left panel; a circle cursor shows its reach. The eraser removes only the part of a stroke it passes over, so rubbing through the middle of a long stroke leaves two pieces. A few shortcuts let you erase without switching categories:

• S Pen: in the Pen or Highlight tool, hold the barrel button while drawing to erase temporarily. Flip the pen for the inverted stylus end if yours has one.
• Apple Pencil 2 / Apple Pencil Pro: double-tap the barrel while in a drawing tool to swap to the eraser. Double-tap again to go back to freehand drawing. This matches the system-wide PencilKit default.

Selecting and editing strokes

Every stroke (pen, highlight, whiteout, or straight line) is selectable. Tap it with the Select tool; the bottom menu bar shows Edit , Duplicate , and Delete . Edit lets you pick a line style Preset, or change colour, width, opacity, and (for straight lines) dash pattern after the fact. Whiteout strokes have no colour setting.

Stylus and touch

By default only the stylus (S Pen or Apple Pencil) draws; a single finger does nothing in drawing modes and two fingers pan and zoom. If you want to draw with your finger, turn on the Touch toggle in the panel. Two-finger pan and zoom still works. The same setting applies to every drawing tool and to shapes.

Your tool choice per category is remembered. Switch to cue placement and back, and your last line style is still selected.
